Sherborne Castle - Sherborne - Castle

Sherborne Castle - Sherborne - Castle

Distance 4.12 miles (6.59 km)
The first building on the site of the current castle was that of a hunting lodge set in a large deer park. Sir Walter Raleigh fell in love with the Sherborne estate on his way to Plymouth and Queen Elizabeth I persuaded the current owners the Church, to relinquish the estate to the Crown. The lease (of 99 years) was transferred to Raleigh and he attempted to modernise the existing 12th century building (the current old castle) without success. He then planned and built a new home on the site of the hunting lodge. You can enjoy the splendour of Sherborne Castle as the venue for your event, and revel in the exclusive ambience for a private function, business meeting, wedding, small conference or event.

Sherborne Abbey - Sherborne - Castle

Sherborne Abbey - Sherborne - Castle

Distance 4.44 miles (7.1 km)
Along with the town’s two castles, Sherborne Abbey is one of the main attractions to the historic market town of Sherborne. It is a magnificent building, with around thirteen hundred years of history, and well worth a visit. There is no admission charge but a donation is recommended. Each year there is also the Sherborne Abbey Festival, the programme of events for which has proved to be a great success. Sherborne Abbey is one of only 18 churches awarded 5 stars in Simon Jenkins' England's Thousand Best Churches. He writes " I would pit Sherborne's roof against any contemporary work of the Italian Renaissance".
