Weekend Break
Absolutely brilliant weekend.

A restaurant chosen several times during 2003 and 2013.I had moved away but now living in Devon again .

Im getting married next year and with my to be husband spent the weekend at the Salty Monk to see if it could be our chisen venue for the reception.

With out doubt Andy and Annette have made the Salty Monk tge most veautiful place for special occasions.

We will be having our reception there and hiring the Salty Monk for a house Party wedding.

Lovely Stay, Wonderful Dinner
From the accommodation to the food and service The Salty Monk was excellent. At last....a chef that prepares vegetarian dishes with imagination and skill rather than the disdain we have often found elsewhere. The ’homemade’ items and little touches and extras were well thought out and delicious. Will definitely stay again when visiting the area. Highly recommended.

A Little Gem!
We recently stayed with our small dog at this pretty little place. It is ideally located due to its location next to the river walk into Sidmouth.

The staff were very friendly and the waiters at dinner were efficient, attentive and very professional in serving our meals.

It is not a cheap place to stay and eat but in our view it is worth it.

We stayed during the festival we found this to be wonderful hotel. Do be sure to book your meal early because the restaurant is small and the food superb!

The people running the hotel did everything to make our stay really lovley - everything in this place is beautiful with enormous attention to detail. Products in rooms lush and plenty of them. My one and only gripe would be instant coffee in the room 😕 Having said that you could always order coffee so maybe that’s unfair. Will be back and thank you.

Privately Owned, Friendly Little Gem
We found this Little Gem on-line and initially were taken in by the quirky name. This hotel certainly exceeded our expectations. Andy, Annette and their staff could not help enough to ensure you had a comfortable stay and they also enjoy a little chat with their guests which made us feel very welcome. The rooms are all individual set in a beautiful, peaceful garden. The food was lovely and the little touches of homemade cookies in your room just added to the lovely experience. We would certainly recommend this hotel for the personal touch, over any big chains and have come home thoroughly relaxed.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at the Salty Monk and have no reservations about recommending it highly.

We stayed in the Bluebell room which is a very nice twin room with comfortable beds and private bathroom. We enjoyed the special touches like the organic toiletries and homemade biscuits, fresh milk and mineral water in the room.

The decor and furnishings throughout the Salty Monk are tasteful, comfortable and a little quirky. The garden is lovely and perfect for a drink in the evening.

The breakfasts were delicious with a good choice of options, the cream tea with freshly made scones to die for, the packed picnic very tasty and the cocktails very moreish.

Annette and Andy have created a very welcoming, comfortable and different kind of luxury accommodation which does not disappoint. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Welcoming, Comfortable Stay In Devon.
Had a lovely stay here, shame it was only for 2nights! Beds extremely comfy, room tastefully decorated. Loved the extra touches of cafetière, fresh milk, homemade biscuits and jar of sweets. Also, I could use the hair drier and mirror at the same time! Sounds crazy, but some establishments overlook the fact one needs both! The breakfast was to die for! All fresh ingredients and presented beautifully. Shame dinner wasn't being served the nights we were there, but it didn't spoil our stay. Will definitely recommend the Salty Monk to friends.

Fantastic Food!
On our fourth visit to the Salty Monk we were once again pleased to enjoy the luxury of first class accommodation. Every little thing seems to have been thought of to enhance one's stay.

We were pleased to dine on a Monday, and although the food cannot compare in range to the normal fare, it is worthwhile as future chefs are being trained.

The usual menu was enjoyed in the restaurant on our second night and the food was superb as usual.

We recommend the Salty Monk to anyone who enjoys being pampered and appreciates good food.

We thought the brasserie and lounge, which have been refurbished since our last visit, were excellent.

We travelled as a foursome and had two rooms - The Magnolia and The Lavender. Both were beautifully appointed with good quality fittings and every little detail right down to a tile for resting hair straighteners was taken care of.

Dinner in the restaurant was delicious and breakfast left us full until the evening!

Service throughout our visit was friendly and efficient.

There is ample car parking available.

You Get What You Pay For In Life!
A highly professionally run family business, with a superb cuisine served in a charming conservatory restaurant. The justification for high prices (3 course dinner £45 pp exc wines) comes firstly in the food - it is after all a restaurant with rooms - and the obvious commitment to excellence shown by all the family. Little touches like top quality glassware, cutlery and decor add to the enjoyment. There is also a more casual dining area where the dishes are just as tasty. Our room was small and the bathroom tiny, but again, with comfortable bedding, nice toiletries and a delicious cooked breakfast, the whole experience was a pleasure. Would we return? Absolutely.

Our First Visit....but Certainly Not Our Last!
My wife and I booked a 2-night stay at the Salty Monk by way of a break in our onward journey to Cornwall. Upon arrival we were greeted by Annette who welcomed us warmly and showed us to our room, the Magnolia. Whilst not overly large in terms of space, this was more than adequate and served it's purpose of providing us with a comfy bed for a good nights sleep. Our dining experience was first class and, once again, attentive service was provided throughout our meal. Breakfast was provided to order and arrived hot and well presented. We look forward to returning the next time we are in Sidmouth.....well done!

An Excellent Find
We chose this little hotel from the pictures on the computer which looked attractive. We were not disappointed. Food, service, accomodation and friendliness all of a very high standard. Evening eating was exceptional but if working on a tight budget may prove to be a little extravagant. Wonderful project being coordinated by owner/chef with the local school to develop young folk with an interest in catering. Monday nights is apprentice night but food standard still at its best. One small point only offered as constuctive---the breakfast choice was wide ranging and good but the fresh fruit was served in a small bowl.It seemed that after two couples had helped themselves on two morning whilst we were there nothing for others. The suggestion of a refill appeared to be declined. Car parking no problem. Thank you we hope to return.

Our Weeks Holiday
The help and service which we were shown by Annette and Andy owners of this delightful and extraordinary hotel cum restaurant, was out of this world and in particular the extent to which outgoing Annette took in ensuring that we were happy with our accommodation and the meals offered. What An Ecperience
Following a recommendation from friends we spent 3 nights at The Salty Monk - we are so glad we did.

This little treasure is truly excellent and deserves its 5 star rating.

The rooms - light and airy. Every last detail is catered for and they are spotlessly clean.

The food - we ate in the restaurant all three nights and in our humble opinion the restaurant should receive a Michelin star. The food is out of this world. The textures and flavours have been carefully thought out and work. Our last night was a tapas evening (to a full house) which was very, very enjoyable. Breakfast is also outstanding.

Add all this to the friendly and personal service and the exquisite garden, what more could you ask for.

Thank you Annette, Andy and the boys - a truly memorable experience. We shall be back.

I cannot speak highly enough of this hotel; the food is EXCEPTIONAL and the personal service from Annette, Andy and their family is SUPERB.

Our room (Lavendar) was lovely and I am missing the 'shower pod' and beautiful standalone bath no end! I'm also craving the homemade granola; the number of items on the menu that they make themselves, from scratch, is baffling. SO good!

Fantastic New Years Meal
We found the Salty Monk late on the internet, for New years eve Meal and stay.

We arrived and were immediately made to feel welcome, we were shown to our room the Rose room. Not big but fantastic for the stay.

What a fabulous find, we could not believe our luck, when we waked into the Bar and saw the whole restaurant was set up so professionally, (you can tell when someone knows their business).

This was also reflected in the food which is probably the best food I have tasted for well over a year, in any restaurant we have been too.

One of the owners is a fantastic Chef, his wife runs a great front of house.

The service was very professional and friendly. Nothing was a problem.

Great little bar area, also a lounge area away from the bar to relax, if needed.

We were also surprised when they said they have a gym, Sauna & Jacuzzi. We booked a couple of hours before dinner, which was nice to relax before dinner.

Overall this hotel with great restaurant is well worth a visit.

I was reluctant to right a review as now other people will go to this great little hotel, which means we wont be able to get in. But I feel very lucky to have been to and enjoy the Salty Monk.

As the sign says Restaurant with rooms.

This is a gem, I would recommend anyone to go. You will not be disappointed, especially with the food.

Amazing - Thank You
We have just returned home from a long weekend at the Salty Monk.

Our room (Magnolia) was absolutely delightful and spotlessly clean. The bed was amazing and had it not been for the quaint chiming of the church bells at 8 am we would have been in danger of over-sleeping! Nice touches were the fresh milk, home made cookies and jar of sweeties. Also, the bottled sparkling water was very welcomed.

The breakfast was superb and most certainly the best we have experienced.

The home made sausages are divine. The pollock was incredible and the home made granola very tasty.

We were looked after by Annette and her lovely son, Aaron - it was a pleasure to be served by Aaron, very professional and gentle in nature too.

Our only disappointment was not eating in the restaurant. We made this a casual weekend and packed according as did lots of walking. We did not feel comfortable eating in such an elegant dining room dressed in our scruffs! The menu alone was mouth watering and the smells wafting up to our room were fabulous. Aaron did make us feel very welcome by stating there was no dress code but we would prefer to adorn best bib and tucker in such surroundings. Next time!

Unique Quality Accommodation
Welcoming hosts. Beautiful food including the very best cooked breakfasts. Lovely clean room and loads of thoughtful touches (you won't find any pre-packed bourbons here) This is how to do individual quality accommodation. Only small gripe was that our bed was too soft (for us). Not cheap but very good value for money.

Weekend Break
Our stay at The Salty Monk was very good and we enjoyed the break in spite of the thunderstorms on the Friday night. The meal we had on Saturday night was excellent, especially the Blue Steak, well done Chef. The only comment we have is that we found the mattress was very comfortable but rather warm for us. Bibi our dog enjoyed the stay exploring the local walks and was glad the nearest relief area was only just over the bridge. Thanks for the nibbles in the room and we hope to come and again stay soon.

Great Little Break
Had a lovely stay at The Salty Monk. We'd booked the mini-spa and made full use of it before dinner. It's well worth the small additional cost if you have time. Dinner was top rate and service was attentive. The room was an attractive mix of old and new, which was a nice surprise as it didn't really come over in the photo's on the website. Overall a very successful birthday treat/weekend getaway.
