A Great Little Hotel.55
We've stayed in Appleby quite a few times and have our favourite and not so favourite hotels. The Midland is up there with the best. We had a warm welcome, a cozy room and fantastic breakfast. I was a little wary that the hotel is a distance from town, but tbh, it's 5 minutes away, though coming back is all up hill. All in all a good break.

A Gem Of A Hotel55
We spent 2 nights at the Midland Hotel for our 1st wedding anniversary. Being the former station hotel - it's next to Appleby's beautifully-preserved railway station - the signage is perhaps not in keeping with its heritage but don't be deceived. Run by a lovely family who were all so very helpful, the rooms are in pristine condition with 100% comfort and providing everything you need. The shower - wow! Also with an award-winning pub we enjoyed chatting with some of the regulars. The breakfasts are unbeatable. Lovely Pub With Rooms55
Have just stayed for four nights bed and breakfast in an immaculate pub in a quiet location next to the historic railway station. No train noise as the room is double glazed. Good real ale on tap. Decent breakfast - they do not do evening meals, but nearby eating places a ten minute walk away. Hosts are great.

Very convenient for those walking the Dales High Way as it is next to the station for the trip back. Nice welcome and good choice of beers .Comfortable rooms and breakfast good but no evening meals but there are options a short distance down the hill in the town .The Indian was very good and kindly booked by the hotel.

The en-suite room you booked is decribed as a small double and is our smallest and so the lowest cost. We have managed to get a double bed, small wardrobe (which is big enough to fit a suitcase inside or on top of), bedside cabinet, dresser and chair, without putting the bed against the wall, a pet hate of ours! We hope the room is not too big, not too small, but \\\"just right\\\" for an overnight stay!

Lovely friendly staff making us feel very welcome from arrival to check out. Rooms are comfortable with everything you need. Beds a little soft but that is a personal preference. A Lovely Welcome And A Great Night\'s Sleep!55
We stayed at the Midland Hotel as a stopover point before travelling on to York the next day. We received a warm welcome and were shown to the room which was a good size and furnished to a high standard. We both slept like logs!
Breakfast the next day was just for the two of us as we were the only guests - it was made to order and just what we both wanted to set us up for the day.
Overall the hotel was clean, comfortable and welcoming. I couldn't fault our stay at all and we'll definitely be back.

Owners (clive & Amie) make you feel really welcome. Gave us an option as to which room we would prefer (although this might not be possible if fully booked). Hotel is conveniently placed for rail station and town. Clive is a CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) member so you are guaranteed a good pint + an array of malt whiskey (if that is your tipple). Much to my delight he even had some authentic cider to sample. Accommodation is 1st class as are your host and hostess.

Highly Recommended And Great Value45
The Midland is an unassuming looking inn near to the picturesque Appleby station. It’s at the top of the hill so may not be your first choice for location but do not dismiss it for that. Take a look inside and you’ll find genial hosts and decent sized clean, well decorated rooms with all the amenities you need. It offered traditional ales and the breakfasts (we had three) were all good quality and served with a smile. We found it was well worth the walk from the town centre and we really enjoyed our weekend there. Highly recommended.

Stayed at The Midland for a couple of nights whilst visiting family in Appleby. Had a really please stay, room was cosy and perfect for a couple of nights away. Good facilities available in the room with a good shower! Hosts are very welcoming with a nice pub downstairs, no noise heard from the pub at all! Great breakfast available in the morning. I would highly recommend for a couple of nights away and will definitely be returning!

Why Would You Want To Stay Anywhere Else?55
When we arrived at The Midland we recieved a warm welcome, our room was clean and the bed had crisp clean sheets. The shower was hot and the towels fluffy. The restaurant had a good selection of bar food and there was a decent range of craft beers and lagers served by friendly staff. In the morning there was an excellent hearty breakfast that sets you up for the day ahead.
What more could you ask for and why would you want to stay anywhere else?

We booked one night at the Midland Hotel as a stopping place on our way back from Scotland, and so that we could go on the Carlisle Settle railway the next morning. Booked it based on Trip Advisor reviews, and although we were slightly apprehensive when we parked,( just because the outside looks a bit "down"), we were absolutely delighted with everything. Really warm welcome by the barman, who showed us to our room, which was just gorgeous. Great and very stylish decor, with absolutely everything that we wanted and needed. A really comfortable bed and a great night's sleep. We had dinner in the restaurant, and had a terrific meal. We asked if we could leave our car there the next morning while we went on the train, and that was absolutely no problem. All in all, really excellent and I would recommend it to anyone.

The Midland is situated next to the railway station, so is ideal for an overnight stay whilst travelling the Settle to Carlise Railway. It is also a downhill 10 minute walk into Appleby.

Arrived by train in Appleby. Hotel is just across the street from the station. I did not hear any train noise from my room. I only had breakfast at the hotel, but it was excellent. I overheard locals talking about the food and drink at the hotel, they loved it. It was an enjoyable stay. Town centre is only 5 minutes away.

This was our final destination on our Dales Highway walk and we were not disappointed. we booked the small double room which was reasonably priced at £65. Heating was on when we arrived. Room and ensuite bathroom both very comfortable. Shower and bathroom facilities were immaculate. lovely family run business. Couple of minutes walk with our back packs and bags to railway station for train home so ideal for us.

Enjoyed a relaxing stay at The Midland. 5 min walk down into the centre of Appleby and the climb back is not too steep! Good food and ale. Bedroom was nicely furnished, bathroom spotless and good bed. Breakfast choices limited but quality of food is good. Toiletries and hot drinks / biscuits a nice touch. Staff very helpful and noise from bar was minimal in late evening. Very convenient for Appleby railway station and a good base if walkiing and traveling by public transport in the Dales and Westmoreland.

Booked at short notice the day before. We were blown away by the cleanliness of the whole hotel. The room was small but it said that on the website, for one night it was not a problem. The shower / toilet were sparkling and instant hot water. (The shower not the toilet). The only problem was no food on a Tuesday, I don't know if this will change in the future, but we were directed to the town, 5 mins down the hill, for a fabulous curry. If the evening meals are anything like the breakfast then you wont be disappointed. If you are looking to stay in this area then stay here, just book it.

thank you so much for your prompt, honest and fantastic review! We are a family run business and to allow us to \\\"catch-up\\\" after a weekend we don\\\'t serve food on a monday or tuesday. We are blessed to be able to serve fab local food, the breakfast bacon etc are from Low Howgill butchers (who have just won a National award for their sausages!) and our main menu is pretty much all homemade and locally sourced wherever possible. We\\\'re also lucky to have really great Indian & Thai restaurants in the town! Hope to see you again, Amie & Clive

Thank you for a very relaxing short break, the bedroom was lovely and comfortable. Couldn't hear any trains which we were worried about when we saw how close we were to the station.

This was our third visit and our second stay here,the room was lovely,food was great.We stayed whilst the Annual Beer Festival was being hosted here which was also very good.Clive & Amie have done a great job with this place and make you very welcome. We look forward to our return.

Enjoyed a great nights stay at the Midland, room was excellent , had evening meal at the pub which was very good and a play area at the back for the children.

Our say at The Midland was generally very good with the place being clean and comfortable. However there were several incidents which could have been avoided.
Late on Saturday after our meals (with two friends not staying at the hotel) we wanted coffees but a prominent member of staff told us we couldn’t have any as the coffee machine had been turned off and would take too long to start up again. There was nothing to stop him boiling a kettle and making a cup of coffee for us. A little later, one of the junior staff assisted and made us coffees so why couldn’t the prominent member of staff do it for us? We were staying at the hotel and our bill for the meal was over £100 so couldn’t he have been a bit more obliging?
Next morning when I settled the bills before leaving I was honest and pointed out that the food bill from the previous night hadn’t been included. There was confusion as the invoice should have been retained behind the bar and there was confusion over what had happened. I said that I said to the staff to put the bill on the room. I knew what had happened on my side and was prepared to pay what I owed. The tone of voice of the person trying to sort out the bill wasn’t pleasant either.
After a load of ringing around it was eventually sorted and we had a bottle of wine free for the confusion and our honesty.
They need to be a bit more organised and obliging to customers, especially when what the customer wants is available by other means such as boiling a kettle for a coffee instead of relying on a coffee machine which has been switched off or broken down and ruling out coffees.
It was generally a very good stay but a bit more flexibility and organising by management for the staff is needed not to put future customers off with incidents of these kinds.

Lovely Stay55
Really comfortable room and lovely 2 night stay. A nice family that run the hotel making you very welcome. We ate in the restaurant on Saturday night and had a lovely meal. Very impressed with the vegetarian pate.

A Pleasure: We'd Return Tomorrow!55
We'd never stayed in a room above a pub and had some concerns it might be noisy, especially since it's near the train station. We need not have worried at all! The pub is a lovely family-run business, with Mom, Dad, and two kids living on site; the pub was quiet on Sunday night and closed Monday night. Aside from that, we were incredibly impressed by the room (the Family En-Suite): remarkably spacious, newly renovated, spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. It faced the street but there was literally no noise: this is a very small and quiet town. Even the trains, which were few, were nearly silent. The breakfast was pleasant in the lounge area of the pub, with both hot and cold options and great coffee available. Local sausage and bacon: amazing. Best of all is that you can eat on site: we arrived tired and sat down for lunch mid-afternoon, and the fish pie (made by the landlady) was something to write home about. Parking was not a problem right outside the door. All in all, I'm pretty certain this was the best choice we could have made in or near Appleby! We'd happily return again.

The Midland Hotel really was one of the nicest places we have stayed in a long time!!
Very friendly welcome, immaculately clean and fresh. While the room wasn't the biggest ever, it was very very clean and tastefully decorated. We stayed on a Saturday night and saw no reason to venture into town!!! The bar was busy and buzzing with a good mix of ale drinkers and younger folk and a great balance of background music and natural "people based" atmosphere. You won't be disappointed...

Comfortable Friendly Stay55
Situated right next to Appleby station so ideal for access to the picturesque Leeds/Carlisle rail line. Would be perfect for walkers/ramblers wishing to explore this part of the Lake District. Smart hotel with a relaxing convivial atmosphere in the bar/restaurant areas. Food is good quality and reasonably priced and on my visit 2 excellent real ales were available. The hosts were friendly and helpful and obviously work hard to provide a comfortable environment for their guests. I think they have 5 rooms. Mine was a clean and spacious en suite which was comfortable and suited my needs perfectly. All in all wholeheartedly recommended with the relaxed laid back feel of the place a real bonus for me. Hotel is at the top of a fairly steep hill with about a 5 minute walk into Appleby which is a quaint tidy town/village with the river Eden running through it.

Yummy Food45
Had dinner with a friend, we both ordered the fish pie. It was absolutely yummy hot with plenty of fish and a good amount of cheese melted on top, the vegetables were perfectly done and the plates were hot. The welcome was warm and friendly. My room, although not big was en-suite, comfy and spotless. I will certainly stay again and recommend it to my friends.

Stayed one night whilst walking in the area. Very nice newly refurbished room, very friendly owners and staff. Breakfast good; good quality food. Selection of real ales in the bar. Ate in the restaurant - limited menu, food not outstanding, but excellent service and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

So sorry you were a little disappointed with the restaurant and pleased you enjoyed the breakfast. We had a very busy weekend and some of our meals were sold out. We usually have a wide choice with 7 starters, 14 homemade main meals (5 of which are vegetarian) and 5 basket meals on the regular menu, plus a special board with 3 or 4 additional meals and a tapas board with 7 or 8 dishes, plus a minimum of 8 homemade desserts. We'd love for you to try us again!

Often on one-night business stops you end up in a place which is adequate for a bed for one night but you know you will not be back and if you do ever pass through the area again you will look for something else. The Midland is NOT one of those places. It is definitely on my list of places to use again - and would even come back for leisure with family. Room was clean, bright and had everything needed, food was excellent and hosts were personable and friendly but not intrusive. We pre-ordered food because we knew we were arriving at the very end of restaurant service time, but did not feel rushed or like we were any sort of a problem.

I visited Appleby while on a bowls tour and chose this hotel as it was near to the Rail Station. The room was clean and modern and the bed very comfortable. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. If I ever return to Appleby I will make you my first choice. My only problem was the steep climb up from the town which may be a problem to some. Great stay though and enjoyed the draught ales too!

We were staying in Appleby for just one night. Our room was lovely, very modern and really comfortable. The only thing missing was a hairdryer and I am quite sure if I had asked the owners they would have provided one as they were friendly and informal. We hadn't planned to eat in the hotel but when we saw the menu it was very appealing with lots of homemade choices. We weren't disappointed and the tapas was very tasty as well. We would definitely go back to stay or for a meal.

One small complaint the background music in the bar was not very loud but could be hea rd in the bedrooms at ir ritational level.Made a difference as we were walking and need our sleep - noise went on until 11ish.

We had a really pleasant two night stay at the Midland. Our hosts were extremely attentive, and really went the extra mile to ensure our comfort.
We had a modern, comfortable room with everything you'd need for a short stay. There was a very nice ambience about the bar/restaurant and the food was excellent (ate there both nights).
Would have no hesitation in recommending the hotel, other than to say that the elderly or less mobile may find difficulty in walking down to the village due to a fairly steep hill and steps.

Behind the basic facade of an old railway inn is a B&B which is as good as any hotel and better quality than any other B&B in which I have stayed (I was "on the road" for twenty years!). Gradually refurbished by owners who really care - and it shows in every detail!
